Degrees Of Freedom

I’ve had a few people into the centre recently trying to get their heads around degrees of freedom. Even if it’s not necessarily something that you need to know, it is often handy to have an understand of it, to help get a holistic upstanding of statistical testing.

Ron Dotsch does a great job of explaining Degrees of Freedom. Ron is a Experimental Social Psychologist. He is an Assistant Professor at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Ron has very nicely written a post about degrees of freedom. It is a nice concise overview and although I tend to favour videos to post up here, I haven’t found (and I think i’d be pushed to do so) anything better than this.

I highly recommend the read…

Regression

There seams to be a high demand for understanding Regression. Here are a few suggested resources  I’d recommend you refer to, to get you on your way:

Discovering Statistics using SPSS -by Andy Field

Statistics without maths for psychology – by Christine Dancey & John Reidy

If these specific books are not checked in, have a look on the shelves around them, there will be many similarly useful books there. (Don’t be put off if it’s subject specific such as the Dancy & Reidy book)

Many online videos….

Introducing Khan Academy

I  would like to introduce you to the wonderful resource of the  Kahn Academy. If you’ve been into see you may well have heard me ranting about it but i’m going to rant some more on here anyway!

Salman Kahn started out by making a few algebra videos for his cousins and now has this amazing and free resource  (which is always music to ones ears!), of over 2500 videos, practice examples and assessments covering many diciplines from Pure Maths and Physics to Finance, Health Care, Chemistry…you name it!

In each nicely presented 10 minute video he manages to clearly explained each concept. The tutorials are very easy to access straight from the home page. You can even log in to keep track of what tutorials you have watched and gain points and badges for doing so. Below is an example video for you, all about Standard Deviation, something that I get asked about quite a lot!
